The Kasiisi Project Board of Directors Role Description
Organization
Since 1997 the Kasiisi Project, along with our Ugandan partner the Kibale Forest Schools Program (KFSP), has supported the conservation of Uganda’s Kibale National Park (KNP) by supporting communities dedicated to protecting and stewarding their lands, waters and wildlife. With nearly half of Uganda’s population under age 17, young people have a significant role to play in preserving the country’s natural resources, both now and in the future. Our programs primarily target 9,000 children attending 16 forest-edge primary schools annually. By fostering a connection between education and conservation, we are informing and inspiring a new generation of Ugandan conservationists.
Board Member Role
The Board of Directors at The Kasiisi Project serves as the governing body responsible for guiding the organization’s mission, values, and programs. They hold primary responsibility for fiscal and strategic oversight of The Kasiisi Project operations, including decision-making and hiring and management of the executive direction. Board members play a vital role as advocates for The Kasiisi Project’s mission, values, and programs.
Overarching Responsibilities
Governance and Strategy:
- Participate in the development and review of the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Monitor and evaluate the organization’s progress toward strategic goals.
- Participate in hiring, oversight, and evaluation of the Executive Director.
- Promote synergy and establish effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow Board members and the Executive Director.
- Assisting the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
Financial Oversight:
- Review and approve the annual budget.
- Monitor financial performance and help ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Assist with fundraising and resource development efforts.
Advocacy:
- Act as an ambassador for the organization and its mission.
- Advocate for the organization’s mission and goals to stakeholders and potential supporters.
Fundraising and Resource Development:
- Consider Kasiisi Project a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. We strive for 100% board giving.
- Leverage personal and professional networks to benefit the organization.
- Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships and collaborations.
- Help identify potential donors and funding opportunities. Where appropriate connect potential donors to the Executive Director.
Risk Management and Compliance:
- Ensure the organization complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
- Assist in risk management and decision-making to protect the organization’s assets and reputation.
Board Meetings and Committees:
- Regularly attend quarterly board meetings via Zoom and attend an annual in-person meeting.
- Serve on board committees, as needed, supporting the board’s maturation process (e.g., finance, governance, fundraising).
- Be responsive to emails, decisions, and feedback between meetings.
Qualifications:
- A passion for The Kasiisi Project’s mission and values.
- Culturally aware and attuned to global perspectives; can engage in a way that is attentive to cultural sensitivities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well with other board members and the Executive Director to make sound decisions.
- A willingness and capacity to actively engage in board and organizational activities, and committee work, as needed.
- Operates with integrity and has a flexible, collaborative, and fun working style.
Time Commitment:
Board members are expected to attend quarterly Zoom meetings and one in-person meeting per year. Additional time may be required for work in-between board sessions, committee meetings, special projects or fundraising events.
